The Turtle Paragraph
Submarines were invented in the early seventeenth century by a Dutch inventor; however, this Dutch inventor’s invention would not find naval combat as its purpose until one hundred and fifty years later. An American inventor named David Bushnell began to build underwater mines when he was just a university student. Bushnell decided that a submarine would be the best way to plant these underwater mines and after deciding this, Bushnell made an eight foot long submersible that was given the title, Turtle, because of its shape. The Turtle was donated to the Patriot side after the outbreak of war with Britain in 1775. Bushnell was the only one who could competently execute the Turtle’s complicated functions; however, Bushnell was frail physically and was unable to pilot the Turtle during combat missions. Ezra Lee was provided as the Turtle’s pilot because of Bushnell’s health. Unfortunately, Ezra Lee’s lack of skill made the Turtle fail all of its assignments to sink ships. During the Battle of Fort Lee, the British sunk the American sloop which the Turtle was being transported on. When the sloop sunk, the Turtle was lost forever.

The Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh, known to the Union as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was a major battle during the American Civil War. The battle started early in the morning, at Shiloh located in Tennessee, while the Confederates were preparing for battle. The Confederate soldiers, led by General Albert Sidney Johnston and Pierre G. T. Beauregard, surprised the Union army, led by Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell, and drove them back towards Shiloh church. Throughout the day on April 6th, 1862, the Confederate army overwhelmed the Union forces, who battled as best as they could but, the Confederacy prevailed. During the afternoon, General Johnston was shot in the leg, the bullet hitting an artery and causing him to bleed to death, making Beauregard assume control. Around five thirty on the evening of April 6th, Beauregard wired Jefferson Davis and reported a complete victory, though Beauregard would find out the next day, he was wrong. At sundown on the same day, General Buell came to assist General Grant with the many troops General Buell brought. On the next day, April 7th, General Grant counterattacked the tired Confederates. Even though the Confederates were tired, they inflicted heavy casualties on the Union forces. By nightfall, the Union had driven the Confederates back towards Shiloh Church, where the Union was trapped only twenty four hours before. While driving the Confederates back, the Union recaptured places known as: The Hornet’s Nest, The Peach Orchard and The Bloody Pond. The Confederates finally went back to Corinth, giving Grant the victory of the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. Grant’s victory cost over twenty-three thousand men, with Union and Confederate casualties combined. This battle was a great reminder, to the Union and to the Confederates, that the war would be long and cost the lives of over six hundred and twenty thousand men.

Christmas and Easter Comparison and Contrast paper
Christmas and Easter are two similar holidays but, like a lot of things, have their differences. Though most Christians usually go to church every Sunday, there are Christians known as “Christmas and Easter Christians” who only attend church on these major holidays. Since Easter and Christmas are “major” holidays, the need to spend money for these holidays is pushed by big money stores, such as Kmart, Walmart and Meijer. Another similarity is that both holidays, though covered up with red and green presents and jelly beans, originated from Christ’s coming. People usually secularize holidays by making it seem all red and green, jelly beans, bunnies and stockings, but they don’t look back to over a thousand years ago to when Jesus Christ was born and when He rose! On the other hand, they do have differences. Christmas is when bigger gifts are more traditionally given, while at Easter, people receive baskets of candy traditionally. Another difference between these two holidays is that Christmas is the Birth of Christ and Easter is the Resurrection of Christ. Both Christmas and Easter, being traditional holidays, have many similarities and differences.
